Decorating with Framed Antique Prints: Antique Originals or Reproduced Antique Pritnts by Joseph Borowy
Decorating with framed antique prints is very popular for many home decorators. Adding antique bird and fish prints is a warming way to enhance a lodge-style atmosphere in a country log cabin. Framing and hanging antique botanical prints, such as ferns, grasses and roses, can be a simple but effective way to give your kitchen a calming and soothing natural feel. While millions create groupings of antique prints for decoration, all are faced with the inevitable decision of choosing to seek out antique originals, or opting to use reproduced antique prints. Although the dilemma itself is hardly discussed among interior decorators, the decision made has important consequences.
Although some observers believe antique original prints have a surperb discernable quality that just cannot be reproduced, many find it hard to differentiate an original antique print from a corresponding reproduction print. This discrepancy mostly depends on the condition of each original print. The amount and quality of digital restoration and enhancement done to a reproduction image prior to printing can also make a significant impact on how the two compare. On the other hand, some things, such as the anitque appearance of worn and aged paper, just cannot be reproduced. Until the early 90's there was almost no question as to whether an antique original looked better than a reproduction antique print. It wasn’t until the current age of computer technology that antique originals were able to be scanned or photographed, digitally enhanced, and reprinted with such astounding quality and detail that the reproduciton prints rival the corresponding originals.
While the variety in comparisons can seem perpetual, there is no debate on the cost factor. Originals will be substantially more expensive. is the cost really justified? It really all depends on the individual. For most do it yourself interior designers and home decorators, the answer is no (especially since many will mount themed groupings in several rooms of their homes). Yet, to a variety of collectors of antiques, the vintage authenticity of a print that is several hundred years old is very desirable. Also, there is something to be said about the investment value of some rare antique prints. Like many collectables, the values of original antique prints can grow over time. This is surely something to take into consideration for those who seek value just as much or more than they do decoration. Still, for most interior decorators it is more cost efficient to look for quality antique reproductions that suit their individual needs.
Cost isn't the sole benefit to decorating with reproduction antique prints. They also provide flexibility and customization options that assist in fitting a unique work of art into an already well decorated room. Some print companies will offer prints in an assortment of size. framing, and matting choices. If trying to stay on a tight budget, seek publishing companies that print in Standard-Sizes- (5x7 - 8x10 - and 11x14). Because these sizes are commonly used, one can easily search for affordable framing and matting materials. The ability to order a print in Black & White or Sepia is also a decorating advantage. While not all publishers offer these options, seeking out those who do may be an important element to adding desired effect without compromising the present theme.
