18-Wheeler Destruction Prowls the Highways by Michael G. Smith
Driving in the presence of an 18-wheeler is a tricky proposition to begin with and one that most people should do with extreme caution. No matter how good the driver of the big rig is, visibility, weather and mechanical problems may rear their ugly head and result in an unforeseen accident. The thing is that an accident with a big rig isn’t always the truck driver’s fault. Car drivers who don’t think about safety or drive cautiously around the rigs often make mistakes that may cost them their lives.
Tailgating is not a good idea and you run the risk of winding up underneath the truck if it stops suddenly. Cutting too close in front of a semi isn’t a smart move either because a fully loaded 18-wheeler trucking along at 55 mph on good roads needs a full football field to stop. The consequences of a huge rig trying to stop in time to not rear end you after you cut in too closely are pretty much guaranteed to be death, due to the enormous impact.
Consider the following scenario: a fatal collision with an 18-wheeler in a construction zone that left three dead and three injured. The facts of the case were that the truck driver slammed into the rear of a stopped car in a construction slow down zone. The truck never braked and when it hit the first car it exploded, killing both occupants. The momentum carried it further forward crashing into two other cars injuring three others. The driver of the semi in this case was taken to hospital for blood testing and questioning.
The area where the accident took place was an officially designated construction zone with numerous warning signs every mile prior to the actual site and on site. The truck driver did not heed the warning signs and caused a multiple fatal accident.
The cause of the above accident was evidently driver inattention, but there are also several other major reasons why 18-wheelers get involved in crashes. Some of the reasons include an overly fatigued driver fighting off sleep, reckless driving, dangerous driving, speeding, aggressive driving, tailgating, playing road hog on the highway, badly maintained truck brakes, and questionable safety systems.
If you have been involved in an 18-wheeler accident or have lost a loved one tragically, you may be eligible for compensation for your injuries and damages. You must speak to a highly skilled personal injury attorney to find out what your rights are and whether or not your case may have a chance of success in the courts.
