‘Room 237′ Explores Fantastic Theories Behind Stanley Kubrick’s ‘The Shining’ [Sundance 2012] (slashfilm)
If Stanley Kubrick were still alive, Room 237 would make him extremely happy.
Directed by Rodney Ascher, the experimental documentary gives the legendary
filmmaker a ton of credit, maybe too much at times, as it explores several
wild, and not so wild, theories about his 1980 horror masterpiece The Shining.
Some theories, such as the suggestion that the film is a metaphor for the
murder of Native Americans, are almost plausible. Others, like that
insinuation that Kubrick made the film to clue everyone in that he faked the
footage of the Moon landing, are much less believable. But no matter the case,
Ascher's film is a fascinating, funny and incredibly well made ode to a film
that's obviously way more dense than most of us give it credit for. The
documentary is an absolute must-see. Room 237 played as part of the New
Frontier category of the 2012 Sundance Film Festival and, after the jump, you

Is Poster Paint And Gouache The Same?... by Anna Meenaghan
What do we know about Gouache as a paint and is there any difference between this and poster paints? As a paint, this is used to make cards and to copy materials. It is possibe to be able to scan this medium and to then go on and make printed articles from it. It is also an opaque type of paint. Are these really poster paints?
I think it is fairly safe to say that many people are under the impression that poster paints are exactly the same, but this is not the case. Poster paint is a cheap paint consisting of proteins and a substantial amount of egg.
This creates a different type of surface and it is highly likely that you will end up with your paper wrinkling. You will find that it is very cheap, so maybe this is why it is used so much for craft projects.
It does not last all that well and often has a tendency to flake. However, it is definately a safe paint. Therefore it is used with children a lot, particularly in schools and nurseries. The fact that it is cheap makes this ideal and an added bonus in this instance.
Gouache will look better when it is finished, colourwise, than poster paints. You can buy this in tubes and poster paints are usually sold in bottles. It might look the same as poster paints, but this is made with a water base.
Interestingly enough, this paint does not always do what you think it will. If you paint a dark colour, it always dries lighter and light colours dry darker and always with a matt textured finish.
You could try using this paint, if you are into landscapes, using a cold pressed paper. I would choose the 140lb. It has so many uses as it can be used wth all different papers, on colllages, for decoupage and many other surfaces.
Paints too, are also available in permanent and extremely permanent colour, and you can see the type printed on the labels. Gum Arabic is mixed with the pigment which gives it a creamy sort of consistency which will add flow to your work. However, this depends entirely on how much chalk is in the pigment.
Artists often use this as their first layer of paint wash on their work. As for the type of brush you should use with this, I would say a sable, or synthetic sable brush. Should you make errors these are easy to rectify and can easily be repainted. You can also add thick layers when you are nearing the end of your painting.
This can crack as the paint is quite thick, so I would not recommend painting too many layers, but whatever you may do, refrain from diluting this too much with water. You can put these in a glass frame, but you would need a passe partout mat to stop them touching the glass.
Henri Matisse is one painter of notability that employed this medium, but today this is used to create designs for illustrations, posters and advertising in the commercial sector.
